Linux updates October 2026 - October 2026 brought numerous updates to Linux applications, with concrete innovations for video editing, streaming, email, reading and productivity. OpenShot4.1 allows you to insert text directly into movies, OBS Studio 33.0 reorganizes the plugins andThunderbird159 improves unread message notifications. In the summary published by OMG! Ubuntu also changes emerge for KeePassXC, Scribus and several media players: some versions are already distributed, others remain in the testing phase.
What changes with the October 2026 Linux updates
With OpenShot 4.1 comes a tool to write directly on video, without having to create SVG titles every time, use Blender or open the title editor. It is meant for things like girths, captions, and credits. The window for editing the text style has been redesigned and also allows you to transfer a style between different elements.
The update extends the recognition of movies that can be optimized for editing, maintaining the original quality in export.IntroducesFurthermore, command line automation for exports and basic modifications, which can also be used by agents such as Claude Code. The version is completed by changes to the export window, shortcuts, keyframes and timeline performance. OpenShot is distributed by the project site, by the Snap Store, byFlathuband via PPA, now also with Arm64 builds.
OBS Studio 33.0 changes plugin management
OBS Studio 33.0 separates the installation paths of built-in plugins from third-party ones. For existing installations, the change does not affect plugins already present up to version 34.0. In the preview window, links between sources improve, with visual edge indicators; furthermore, hidden sources no longer interfere with the positioning of visible ones.
From a technical point of view, the built-in Chromium framework goes from version 127 to 150. Support for NVENC hardware coding also arrives on ARM laptops equipped with NVIDIA GPUs. However, there is an important limitation for those using Ubuntu 24.04 LTS: OBS 33.0 no longer supports this distribution, so it will not be received through the relevant PPA. The source reports the unofficial Snap package as an alternative.
Thunderbird 159 and KeePassXC 2.8 improve daily use
Thunderbird 159adds an unread email indicator to the notification area icon on Linux and shows the count by hovering the pointer over the icon. The release also fixes issues with missing or truncated attachments, message searches, printing, and CalDAV and CardDAV synchronization. Other fixes reduce excessive demands on the Microsoft Graph, CPU usage with malformed message databases, and crashes at startup when restoring tabs.
For password management, KeePassXC 2.8 introduces auto-typing support in Wayland, a feature expected by users of this graphical environment. Notable updates mentioned in the summary also include Firefox, with JPEG XL support, and Caliber, with AI-based reading voices.

Reading and multimedia:FBReader, Haruna and Tributary
FBReader2.5 arrived in release candidate version for Linux, Windows and macOS, while the stable version was still expected in the following weeks. The redesigned library introduces favorites, custom shelves and group operations. There are integrations with the Readino store, initially enabled in the UK, US and Australia, and withWriteto collect notes and highlights from reading platforms. On desktop, voice reading via system synthesis, audio and video content in EPUBs, CBR and CB7 archives and OPDS 2.0 catalogs are added.
Haruna1.9.0 makes the OSD configurable and adds a panel that collects subtitles in transcription form. Chapters are indicated by lines on the progress bar, and details appear as the pointer hovers. For YouTube videos opened in the player, the portion already loaded is visible. Tributary 0.7.2, still in the alpha phase, introduces the Ctrl+J shortcut to return to the currently playing song and improves the visibility of the equalizer in dark themes, as well as updating network libraries and hashing.
Scribus, ONLYOFFICE and other Linux applications
Scribus1.7.4, development build, revamps table editing with spreadsheet-like selection and keyboard navigation, conditional formatting, and pasting from other applications. Improves support for right-to-left and bidirectional texts, adds a getting started wizard, and editable page size templates. It also fixes seven memory safety vulnerabilities in image loaders and import filters - the same fixes are included in stable Scribus 1.6.7.
ONLYOFFICE 10.0 is described in the summary as completely rebuilt, with optional AI tools. BleachBit solves problems in administrative cleanup operations on Linux. The Blanc browser, based on Electron, adds, among other things, customizable mouse gestures, integrated uBlock Origin, Italian language and support for the Kagi search engine. Kdenlive receives a second maintenance release of the 26.08 series, while qBittorrent 5.3.0 switches to the libtorrent 2.2 series for the default build: the change may reduce some I/O problems compared to the 1.2 series, but penalize reading on systems that do intensive seeding. Cine 1.8.8 also improves startup, click handling, and initial window sizing.
