Home Assistant: the Cloud plan becomes Link in protest against Big Tech
Home Assistant renames its "Cloud" plan to "Link" to distance itself from the term "cloud", now considered compromised by Big Tech. No changes
The name change: from Cloud to Link
home Assistant, one of the most popular platforms in the world of home automation, has announced a name change for one of its subscription plans. The service previously known as "Home Assistant Cloud" will now be called "Home Assistant Link". This change, although apparently minimal, hides a strong stance on the part of the founders of the platform towards large technology companies (Big Tech).
The decision is not linked to new features or technical changes in the service offered. On a functional level, for end users, absolutely nothing will change. The service will continue to offer the same features and reliability that have characterized Home Assistant Cloud since its introduction.
Update:The "Home Assistant Cloud" plan has been renamed to "Home Assistant Link" starting October 2, 2026. The change is purely nominal and does not affect the functionality of the service.
The reasons behind the protest
The real reason for this name change lies in the philosophy of the creators of Home Assistant. They believe that the term "cloud", once synonymous with innovation and decentralization, has now been emptied of its original meaning and compromised by the massive and often monopolistic use of Big Tech. The latter, according to the founders, would have distorted the concept of cloud, associating it with control and centralization practices that are difficult to reconcile with the open-source and community spirit of Home Assistant.
The choice to rename the service to "Link" therefore aims to create a clear dissociation from this distorted use of the term "cloud". We want to underline how Home Assistant Link remains a service that connects the user to their devices and data, without necessarily implying dependence on infrastructures controlled by a few large corporations. It is a symbolic but significant form of protest to reaffirm the fundamental values of the platform.

What changes (and what doesn't change) for users
As mentioned, for users who already use or intend to subscribe to the service, switching from Home Assistant Cloud to Home Assistant Link will not make any practical difference. The features remain the same: secure remote access to your Home Assistant instance, integration with voice assistants such as Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, and other conveniences that make managing your smart home even simpler and more efficient. The price and subscription methods will not change.
This strategic move by Home Assistant demonstrates the importance the community places on its identity and principles. The renaming of Home Assistant Cloud to Home Assistant Link is a strong signal, a way to stand out in a market increasingly dominated by large platforms, reaffirming the independence and original vision of the project.
